Childbirth Class at NYU Medical Center

My wife signed us up for the childbirth class at NYU Medical Center. It’s a 3 hour class once a week for 5 weeks. The instructor is going to teach us about pregnancy, body changes, stages of the labor process and caring for the newborn baby.
Our first class was last Thursday. The class room was not what I excepted. It was a conference room type setting. I was expecting a yoga room setting, where we would sit on the floor and hold each other. There were 6 couples including us. Everyone seem to be nice and eager to learn about babies and how they come out of the vagina.
The first class starts off with the usual awkward introductions. People stated their names and say something unique about themselves. One couple met on Match.com, which is pretty cool. One young couple have been together for 17 years! They look like they were in their mid to late 20’s. We were lame and just said we been dating for 10 years, married for 3 years.
I was attentive for the 1st hour, but then gradually started to daze out. I think my wife learn everything she needed to learn. Here’s what I learned:
- As the baby grow, the mommy eats less but pees constantly. So you should map out the restroom areas on your commute.
- Always support your wife throughout the pregnancy. Be a good servant for your wife.
- If you’re having contractions, drink a glass of cold water to see if it’s for real. If the baby is ready to come out, the cold water would help accelerate the process.
- The best way to delivery the baby is to squat down, unfortunately the doctor will not be able to assist in this position.
We performed some couple exercises and meditated. There were a few other things, but I don’t recall right now. Maybe next time I’ll take notes.

I went through the same classes before our son was born. I agree. It was very informative, yet boring. I was the one that the instructor would call on because I was staring at the ceiling or nodding off.
The instructor actually talked to me on the side and told me I need to pay more attention…
What did dhe expect? I just worked 10-12 hours and had to sit in a classroom for another three hours. I was ready for dinner and a pillow.
Anyways, take in as much as you humanly can. It did help take away a lot of the surprise factor!
