Becoming a Father

Becoming a Father

father and son painting

My co-worker ask me how it feels to know that I’ll be father soon. I never actually gave it much thought. After being a son for 29 years, now it’s my turn to be a father. I will be guiding my son’s early years. Teaching him life lessons that I acquired. Hopefully I can help him avoid some pitfalls that I fell in. But then again, life is about ups and downs. We learn from our mistakes. Sometime you just have let them learn on their own.

Do I want to be like my dad? No, not exactly like him. I can’t say anything bad about my dad. He worked extremely hard for our family. I made a ton of mistakes when I was growing up. Mistakes that would have driven parents nuts. He never gave up on me. He was always by my side when I needed him. I guess in many ways I do want to be like my dad.

When I was growing up, my dad probably worked about 80 hours a week. We didn’t have time to bond. We didn’t go to baseball games or events like that. Once in a blue moon, he’ll take me and my cousin to a movie. That was a rarity though. Our relationship became much better after I got married. I think he realized that I’m actually grown up after I moved out of the house. Nowadays, we could talk and joke around like buddies.

I want to be able to bond with my son while he’s young. In fact, I want to bond with my son and my dad at the same time. I could make up the time that I didn’t have with my dad. I’ll have time because I won’t be working 80 hour weeks. We could go fishing together or go watch the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. My son will be a Knicks fan that’s for sure.

I’ll have more to say on this in a few months when my son is born.
