Using rubbing alcohol to aid in its drying up ensures that it comes off within one to two weeks after birth. The fallen-off stump will stay whole as long as you put it in a sealed plastic bag. It may get a little "hairy" but will remain stumpy. Happy New Year. Best source of infection and discomfort for a baby is to do nothing with the umbilical cord stump.
