Umbilical Cord Finally Off

cord.gif

One of the most unattractive parts of a newborn baby is the umbilical cord. It just doesn’t look nice on a cute baby.

Our baby’s cord came off yesterday. It was on for 3 and half weeks, which is longer than normal. They are usually off by the 2nd week. It looks like a huge dried up bugger. I think my wife is preserving it for some reason.

While the cord was still on the baby, we used the new method to care for it. The method was to leave it alone. No rubbing alcohol on the base or anything. By not using alcohol, it was suppose to speed up recovery. Baby’s been fine since it came off, so I guess that method works.

Best source of infection and discomfort for a baby is to do nothing with the umbilical cord stump. Using rubbing alcohol to aid in its drying up ensures that it comes off within one to two weeks after birth. The fallen-off stump will stay whole as long as you put it in a sealed plastic bag. It may get a little “hairy” but will remain stumpy.

    Happy New Year.

I did treat my daughter’s with alcohol…and it still took about 3 weeks to fall off.
