Our baby was born on December 5th 2007 @ 9:08am.

His name is Scott. He arrived slightly earlier than what we anticipated. His original due date was December 26th. We kinda knew he would be here before then, but not that early.

We just had a baby shower on Saturday December 1st. My wife’s co-workers had a baby shower for her on December 4th. Thanks everyone for the wonderful gifts.

Here’s a short recap of what happened last night/this morning:

Childbirth Class at NYU Medical Center 3

forceps.jpg

The instructor spoke about the different tools that can assist in delivering babies. The main tools are the forceps and vacuum extractor. The forceps tool is like a salad tong. You can use it to help extract the baby or use it to toss salad. Two tools in one. It’s mainly used when the baby is not moving down the birth canal, a.k.a the vagina. It’s also used when the mom or baby is in distress during labor.

We went for the 2nd class tonight. My wife went to the restroom, while I waited for her in the reception area. A lady came through the front door apparently looking for the class we were in. Being a nice guy, I promptly pointed her to the wrong location. Luckily my wife came out of the restroom in time to point her to where we were supposed to be.

3d-4d-ultrasound.jpg

My wife went for a 4D ultrasound today. It was not medically necessary, but she had always wanted to do it from the beginning. Insurance was does not cover it because it’s an elective procedure. The total cost was $225, it included a 25 minute DVD of the session that was extended to almost 40 minutes. Numerous printouts of the different images were also included.

Eating Fish During Pregnancy

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

fishes.jpg

In 2001, U.S. health officials warned that pregnant women should limit their fish consumption to 12 ounces a week. Fearing that mercury may cause harm to the fetus, many women ate less and less fish. A recent survey shows that 90 percent of women are eating less than the FDA recommended amount of fish. But now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is saying that potential problems caused by mercury pale in comparison with harm caused by lack of omega-3 fatty acids. (more…)

Ice Cubes on the Belly

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

icecubes.JPG pregnant_belly.jpg

My wife heard from her friend that if you put ice cubes on your belly, the baby will move away from that spot. I have my doubts, but we gave it a shot anyways. She got a few ice cubes from the freezer and wrapped paper towel around it.

Week 28:

We were in bed last night, I was talking to the belly about the Yankees. I was telling the belly how the Yankees are probably done, being down 0-2 in the series against the Cleveland Indians. The baby in the belly responded with a punch or kick to my face. He thinks the Yankees still got a chance.

Giant Baby

Two weeks ago, a blessed Russian lady in Moscow gave birth to a 17 pound baby girl. That’s more than twice the “average” weight of newborns. She delivered the baby girl by cesarean section in a maternity clinic. The mother and child were both in good condition at the time. But now, the baby girl is in the special care of the local health department. Hopefully she pulls through.

Listen to your unborn baby!

deluxe prenatal gift set

In a earlier post I wrote about Belly Talk, which involves a person talking to the unborn child in the belly. Yesterday, while looking for more items for our baby registry I saw a gift set from BebeSounds called Deluxe Prenatal Gift Set. In the gift set, there are devices that can help you hear the baby, talk to the baby, record the baby’s sounds, and play music for the unborn baby.

Last night my wife woke up in the middle of the night with leg cramps. Both her calves were hurting. Being a great husband, I got up right away and started to rub her legs. Then she got excited and started rubbing my legs.

Do not breastfeed at these places

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

drinking milk

I am pro breastfeeding in public places. When a baby needs the mother’s milk, the baby must have it. It’s a natural thing. We shouldn’t be offended by a woman feeding her young. If you have a problem with it, you can choose to look away.

Husbands in the Delivery Room

man confused

In the early 1900’s to 1970’s, the husbands waited in the waiting room while the wives gave birth in the delivery room. Sounds like a good deal. Something happened in the 80’s that changed all that.

Starting around the early 20 something week of pregnancy, my wife started talking to her belly out loud. She wasn’t going nuts, but who knows for sure. She was speaking to our baby. She claims the baby can hear spoken language at that development stage. (more…)
