First Real Diaper Change

diaper-change.jpg

We changed our first diaper yesterday on a live baby. We were over at my parent’s home for dinner. My brother’s baby needed a diaper change, my mom told us to go change it. I was looking forward to it.

I wasn’t too afraid. The practice at the childbirth class really helped. I knew the basics.
The only scary thing is thinking about how the baby can just let go any second, like a ticking time bomb. Thankfully it was a non-event. My mom came in at the last minute to secure the diaper and it was all good. The baby didn’t cry or anything. Oh yeah, there wasn’t any poop, which was great. No weird smell.

Newborn diaper changing is simple, just learn the baby’s signs of “going”. My wife experienced being blasted by our first son and daughter a day after they were born, somewhat hilarious, definitely disgusting. Breastfed baby diapers are rather decent smelling it’s those evil formula-fed baby diapers that are horrible. When the baby starts eating solids, forget it! The smell is horrid. It takes a little getting used to though.
